Too Busy To Be Effective

Being busy and being productive are two completely different things. In order to be productive, you need to know how to be effective. I share 5 things you need to be aware of, to be effective.

Too Busy To Be Effective

By Hilda Lunderstedt, 17 July 2017

Have you noticed that whenever you ask someone how they are doing; the answer is always how busy or hectic they are. Being too busy and hectic has become part of life and it is has somewhat become cool to work too many hours or sleep too little. Being busy becomes a habit and many people think this is what they should be, from the moment they wake up, to when they go to bed. In itself, being constantly busy might not be a problem, but for entrepreneurs, who constantly have to be creative, innovative and solving problems, the secret to being effective, creative and a source of value to your organisation, is in the quiet un-busy times.

These are the times when you can still your mind and thoughts, clear the cobwebs and restore your senses from constant stimulation. I have noticed that I come up with solutions to problems and even ideas for new products in quiet times, not in the busy times. When we are constantly busy, we go into auto-pilot mode and become task oriented. Stepping out of being busy is the answer to growing yourself and your business. Almost all of the most successful people in the world schedule quiet time and time by themselves into their daily lives. If you don't do that yet, then perhaps it's time to consider changing how you schedule your day and week.

If being busy is a habit for you, it might take time to become aware of what you do with your time and change your habits to prevent burn-out, being over tired or overwhelmed.

The awareness required to be effective:

1. The awareness of stress triggers

For most of us, by the time we realise we are stressed and overwhelmed, it is already too late and we missed all the triggers and red flags.

Become aware of what causes you to become overwhelmed and ineffective (the triggers) and how you respond to them (the red flags). Become aware of how often these happen and over how long a period they are present in your life.

You can then proceed to put measures in place to prevent triggers, to take notice of the red flags and to avoid becoming stressed and ineffective.

2. The awareness that you would rather be doing something else

Be aware of what you often think of, when you would rather be doing something else, than what you are currently dealing with. We all have to do things we don't like to do or don't want to do, but if you spend all your time wishing you could be doing something else, you have to take note of that. Get someone else to do the things you hate to do. As a business owner, you owe it to yourself and your team to be enjoying what you do and to be present in the moment.

3. The awareness that you are avoiding issues and problems that will grow bigger the longer you avoid them

All of us fall prey to this. We are too busy and have no energy to deal with problems and issues and hope they will just go away. Instead, they linger, they grow and they become enormous and as you will learn, when problems are not dealt with, they explode. Deal with issues and problems quickly and effectively. If it is something that will not have a lasting impact on your life or business, do not make a big fuss about it, but if it is, tackle the problem head-on as quickly as possible.

4. The awareness that you spend time on trivial matters

Ever wondered where the day, week or even months went and what you did with your time? We all experience that. If this happens constantly and over a long period of time, you can be sure that you spend your time on trivial time-wasting activities, that will not contribute to your business aspirations and goals. To be an effective person, you have to be very conscious of what you spend your time on, who you spend your time with and what conversations you have. Do not waste your valuable time on trivialities.

5. The awareness that you can be more successful

If you constantly have the nagging feeling that you are not as successful in your life and/or business as you could be, do not ignore it. This is the feeling that will spur you on to do new things and grow. Do not play small and occupy your mind with trivial things and people. Always think bigger (even if you are already thinking big) and find people that will help you get there. Do not dwell in feelings that you should be more - just be more.

Once you become aware of these 5 things, you can start being more effective.
